Course

The Raft Race Segment:

Paddling across the Ohio River during the Freedom Challenge Urban Eco CompetitionYou must have your raft in position by 8:45am. Your raft position on the bank is in order of when your registration was received and will be given to you by a race official. Lifejackets must be worn properly while on the rafting segments of the competition. After completing the first leg of the raft race, remove your lifejacket and place it in your raft. You must beach your raft in the designated area marked by cones and flags. Your team must carry your raft out of the water to a designated area close by. All rafts are the same as are the paddles and lifejackets, you need not take the same raft back. When rafting back across the river, you will make a direct route (straight across the river to Newport, not around the pier).

The Run Segment:

The run is three miles through Sawyer Point Park across Columbia Parkway with a loop through Mt. Adams, (please see the course map).

The run segment is half up hill and half down. While running in Mt. Adams, you will always be on sidewalks NEVER in the street. We do not have permission to close streets, and anyone not staying on the sidewalks will cause their team to be disqualified. While running up and down the pedestrian stairway to and from Mt. Adams, you must stay on the far right side of the stairs. Use the railings on the way down. There will be boy scouts and Cincinnati Police officers where needed throughout the course as well as competing in the event. Please make use of all water stops.

The Obstacle Course:
Going
The obstacle course for the 2002 event will include, but not limited to the following; an eight ft. vertical wall crossing, low crawl course, tire run challenge, a series of four ft. barricade crossings Please be careful doing all the obstacle course challenges.  You are a team, as fast as your slowest member. Use teamwork, you will all need to be back in the raft together to raft back across to finish the event and plant your flag.

Finishing the Freedom Challenge:

After completing the second leg of the raft race across the river, your team must pick up a flag proceed to the top of the levee and you will be directed to where you plant your flag to establish your (place) and your team time. One team wins the event.  The winning team, after completing the raft segment back to Newport must pick up the American Flag and all six team members must cross the finish line together at Newport on the Levee to plant the flag and be declared the winners. Each team will plant their own flag thus establishing your finishing time and your rank in the start for the next years’ event, You must carry your raft, paddles and jackets to a designated area. For this year at least, there will be no second or third place finishers only first place. All team must cross the finish line together and plant their flag to receive their ending team time.

After Party:

There will be a celebration following the Freedom Challenge. The celebration will be on a B&B Riverboat. The riverboat will be docked at James Taylor Park, which will be very convenient for us. Families and spectators are welcome on the riverboat cruise and there will be food available for purchase, however, food is provided complimentarily to participants only. The Riverboat is scheduled for an 11 am departure and will return around 1pm.
